Forrest called in with a problem with his e-mail. Using Entourage, he’s getting an error when checking mail: “Error 3176 cannot retrieve mail. The server cannot be found be sure the mail server info is entered correctly in the account manager and that dns settings int he network control panel are correct.”
From the Tools pull-down menu, select Accounts. Select the account in question, click Edit. Make certain that the POP (post office protocol) server is correct. For Forrest, who has a Yahoo account, we believe it should be:
pop.mail.yahoo.com
This is all assuming that Forrest can surf the web, and that the only connectivity problem seems to be with his e-mail. We (re) discovered here that you have to upgrade your Yahoo account, which means you’ll pay Yahoo $19/year to use POP mail software to check your account. The free Yahoo mail will not allow you to check your mail using POP software such as Entourage, Mail or Eudora, it forces you to check your mail through the Yahoo website so that Yahoo can make money showing you advertising while you’re checking your e-mail.

Hi, during the 7/27/05 show, you mentioned a hardware firewall and where to purchase it. That info is not listed in the show notes. Would you email that information, and if there is a past shownote or website that explains why a hardware firewall is needed, could you also point me in that direction! Although I am very much a novice to the cyberworld, I really enjoy the show. Thank you!
