Shaumburg Shawn called in about his freezing G4 tower
Given he has already taken the somewhat drastic step of reinstalling his OS (clean install), and Shawn is still experiencing freezes on his Mac OS X 10.3.9 G4 tower, it’s looking more likely he has some sort of a hardware problem. Things to check:
• Your network cable (ethernet). Assuming you’re using ethernet to connect to your internet router, make sure it’s plugged in and in good shape, try replacing it.
• Your airport card. If you have one, try turning it off and using your ethernet instead. You can turn it off by clicking on the airport indicator at the top of your screen, to the right, and selecting Turn AirPort Off.
• Your RAM. If you have enough RAM, you may remove one chip at a time to try and identify a chip that’s gone bad (yes, it happens). You may also try a RAM check utility, such as MemTest , note this is a command line utility that must be run in single user mode (after you read the MemTest instructions, after MemTest installation restart your system while holding down the shift key).
• Use a Disk Utility. Start with Apple’s Disk Utility located in your Utilities folder (because it’s free!), and end with a commercial product such as Disk Warrior
